Mansion in Mourning: Victorian Mourning Customs

Did you know that during the 19th Century mourning became an established and highly structured social ritual? The impressions and approval of others governed individual behavior, and those that ignored proper etiquette faced social ostracism. Learn more about the rituals and customs behind our modern day funeral practices as you visit the “Mansion in Mourning: Victorian Mourning Customs” exhibit at Oaklands Mansion in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Mansion in Mourning: Victorian Mourning Customs can be viewed by the public at Oaklands Mansion during October. The fascinating exhibit will focus on Victorian mourning customs when the mansion is placed in mourning. Customs such as draping the mirrors, how long a widow would mourn for her husband or children, social expectations and dress will be explored during special tours.
